For some time in the test versions of Chrome, there was an updated design in the style of Material Theme – the new iteration of Material Design. With the release of a stable 68th build, this option is available to all comers, but you can find it only in the list of experimental settings. Below is a small instruction on how to get a new interface right now on Windows, Chrome OS and Linux.
color, and the address bar has a rounded shape instead of a rectangular shape.
To activate the new design, follow the instructions:
- In the address bar, type chrome: // flags / # top-chrome-md and press Enter.
- On the opened page you need to find the section “UI Layout for the browser’s top chrome” (it will be highlighted in yellow).
- Select “Refresh” or “Refresh Touchable” (for devices with touchscreen).
- Restart the browser.
At the time of writing Material Theme is not available to all users. In particular, the design is not activated on macOS.
If you do not like the new design, you can turn it off by selecting “Default” instead of “Refresh” in the same settings. However, Google sooner or later completely abandons the old interface, so it’s better to get used now.
